We’ve recently come across this song, and introduced it to our church the past few Sundays. It is really beautiful and worth looking at if you are doing a series on the cross, or Jesus work to bring us to the new creation, or are looking for a song for communion Sunday.
Have a look at the words below, and there are links to a YouTube video and chord sheet.
The song tracks Jesus journey to the cross, from the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where it looked like everyone believed him and wanted him as King, to the agony of the cross, and ending with the triumph of King Jesus exalted in the new Jerusalem.
When I first heard it, I wasn’t massively struck by the tune, and I do feel like the chords don’t always fit, so we change them a bit (particularly in the third verse, dropping to just piano and playing around with the relative minor). Do get in touch if you’d like to know the chords we’ve used.
The tune itself grows on you, so give it a few listens! Also, the chord sheet provided is in B, but we thought that C was a more comfortable key for church to sing it in.
The words are just incredible. Particularly the second half of the second verse:
See the King who made the sun
And the moon and shining stars
Let the soldiers hold and nail Him down
So that He could save them
Wow. This is defiantly a part of what Jesus did that I too easily forget.
Our church seemed to pick it up pretty quickly, so it is a good one for congregational singing. I don’t think it needs much accompanyment, we tried to keep it quite low key to fit in with the subject matter, particularly in verse 2 and the first half of verse 3. Be aware of overcooking- less is definitely more. These are the sort of words I think we want to sing with space to reflect, rather than being distracted by too much going on up front.
See what you think!
VERSE 1
See Him in Jerusalem
Walking where the crowds are
Once these streets had sung to Him
Now they cry for murder
Such a frail and lonely Man
Holding up the heavy cross
See Him walking in Jerusalem
On the road to save usVERSE 2
See Him there upon the hill
Hear the scorn and laughter
Silent as a lamb He waits
Praying to the Father
See the King who made the sun
And the moon and shining stars
Let the soldiers hold and nail Him down
So that He could save themVERSE 3
See Him there upon the cross
Now no longer breathing
Dust that formed the watching crowds
Takes the blood of Jesus
Feel the earth is shaking now
See the veil is split in two
And He stood before the wrath of God
Shielding sinners with His bloodVERSE 4
See the empty tomb today
Death could not contain Him
Once the Servant of the world
Now in vict’ry reigning
Lift your voices to the One
Who is seated on the throne
See Him in the New Jerusalem
Praise the One who saved us
