Amos and Music Ministry

It’s the thing you wouldn’t ever want the Lord to say to your musicians….

23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!

(Amos 5:23-24).

What if, for all our rehearsing and practising, for all our investments in training and gear, the Lord was sickened by our music ministry? That was the scene in Israel as the prophet Amos arrived from the southern Kingdom of Judah with messages and warnings of judgement. His message was largely ignored (who needs some foreigner turning up declaring woes when life seems secure and prosperous). Religious life appeared to be thriving, the shrines were packed, the sacrifices and offerings were flowing abundantly.

I was called upon to preach from Amos 5 recently. As someone at an apparently thriving church with a busy music ministry, these words were a sobering but timely warning. It strikes me this is a passage all of those involved in leading corporate worship should be familiar with. Listen to more here
